The Tanoto Initiative at the Wharton School (TIWS) was established in 2013 through a gift of US$6 million (US$5 million endowment and US$1 million term) from the Tanoto Foundation. The TIWS aims to encourage collaboration between the Wharton School and academic institutions in the ASEAN region, with a particular focus on Indonesia. The main components of the TIWS include Global Faculty Development Program, Faculty International Seminars, Faculty Research Grants, Global Modular Courses, and the Wharton Scholarship and Ideas for Action Incubator Competition.

Partnering with Asia Philantropy Circle

Tanoto Foundation together with APC initiated the publication of the Education Giving Guide for Indonesia in 2017. This guide has been developed based on a study supported by McKinsey & Company and AlphaBeta under the title of Productive Livelihood Catalysis: Educational Intervention Guidelines Through the Accelerated Track for Large-Scale and Maximum Impact.

Working with Filantropi Indonesia

Tanoto Foundation is a member of Filantropi Indonesia, an association of Indonesia-based philanthropists and CSOs committed to sustainable development. Tanoto Foundation actively participates in the networking and sharing events, as well as the annual philanthropy festivals. Tanoto Foundation spoke at Filantropi Indonesia's Festival (FiFest) 2016 and FiFest 2018. At the 2018 Indonesian Philanthropy Festival FiFest Tanoto Foundation has been appointed as the leader of the Education Cluster. In August 2018, Tanoto Foundation provided Grant to Filantropi Indonesia for the development and initial activites of the education cluster for 1 year.
